🇨🇦🕯️ Canada: four soldiers killed and 39 injured, 19 critically, in a fast-moving grass fire during live-fire training at CFB Wainwright
Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed and 39 injured, at least 19 of them in critical condition, in a fire at CFB Wainwright, Alberta, at about 4 p.m. on Oct. 17, National Defence said. The dead, all assigned to the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, are Sergeant Morgan Wong and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark. Members of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group were conducting live-fire training as part of Exercise Apollo Shooter when a fire ignited; high winds spread it rapidly and it overtook the unit’s administrative area. Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland said the grass fire had been considered under control until unusually strong winds shifted it quickly, calling the speed something he had never seen, and said an investigation will determine whether the tragedy was "preventable.” Prime Minister Mark Carney called it "one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime,” ordered flags lowered and requested a detailed report. Military police, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and the RCMP are investigating. Reported by CBC, The Globe and Mail, CNN and Al Jazeera.
CORRECTION: Earlier reports citing unnamed military sources of at least seven dead were wrong; officials confirmed four fatalities. Reports of a gas-line explosion have not been confirmed.
NOT YET KNOWN: What ignited the fire and the circumstances of each death. The military has not said how seriously each of the 39 injured was hurt beyond the number in critical condition.
The official account shifts the story from an unexplained "explosion” to a wildfire that outran a response plan within seconds, which will focus the investigation on range fire controls, wind forecasting and the placement of troops.
